How? Massive Data Deduplication
Data Domain’s high-speed inline deduplication technology identifies redundant files and data at a variable segment length and highly granular level —as they are being stored—reducing the amount of backup data by an average of 20x, and as much as 60x for virtual environments. Data Domain deduplication storage systems are designed for a range of use cases across an expanding disk-based storage tier. As customers continue to reduce their reliance on tape for backup and disaster recovery (DR), they are also using Data Domain systems for archiving, long term online retention of enterprise data for reference, litigation support and regulatory compliance, and a host of other nearline applications.

Deduplication enables dramatically longer on-site retention of data — months instead of day — keeping data highly available. As data is deduplicated, Data Domain Replicator software moves only the unique new data segments across the wide area network (WAN) for DR, remote office data protection and multi-site tape consolidation. Replicated files are safely off-site and can now be recovered in seconds or minutes, without needing to locate, transport or mount a tape.

In addition, Data Domain systems offer advanced levels of continuous data verification, fault detection and healing. Data Domain’s proprietary Data Invulnerability Architecture ensures that stored data is accurate and recoverable. Data Domain Virtual Tape Library Software: By emulating multiple tape libraries over a Fibre Channel interface, this option provides deduplication storage for FC SAN environments in large enterprises.
OpenStorage (OST) Software Option: This allows a Symantec NetBackup 6.5 Media Server to manage an optimized connection between Data Domain systems and an administrator to to backup, recover and control replication from the NBU console.

Data Domain systems deduplicate data inline during the backup process at speeds of up to 1.4 TB per
hour (22.4 TB per hour for the DDX Array). Data is stored on-site for longer term retention on disk and immediate
restores. The deduplicated data can also be replicated over the WAN to a remote site for disaster
recovery purposes or for consolidating tape backups to a central location. Data Domain systems provide
a full range of replication options, including selective replication, many-to-one and bi-directional replication.

Data Domain Stream Informed Segment Layout (SISL) Architecture, leverages the continued advancement of CPU performance to add direct benefit to system throughput scalability. Other deduplication technologies require additional disk drives or “spindles” to achieve the throughput speeds needed for efficient deduplication. Ironically, these other hybrid or “post-process” technologies mandate the use of more disk drives to offload data before deduplicating, not to mention longer times to “DR readiness.”
Data Domain Replication Technology transfers only the deduplicated and compressed unique changes across any IP network, requiring a tiny fraction of the bandwidth, time and cost, compared to traditional replication methods.
